Chomsky’s “Plutonomy & the Precariat” Explains Why Jobs aren’t Coming Back

Brooklyn, New York in March of 2012

Earlier this month Noam Chomsky published an incisive essay entitled: Plutonomy and the Precariat: On the History of the U.S. Economy in Decline*, which clearly elucidates how the extreme concentration of wealth with the 1% has transpired because our country no longer manufactures actual things — bankers, stock brokers and financiers simply manipulate the idea of money. The United States has mutated into a vastly economically stratified oligarchy, 99% of whom have almost no political power or influence in our nation’s participatory “democracy”.

In this brief excerpt, Chomsky explains how these huge shifts in our economic structure have ravaged the working class, many of whom have a pervasive sense of despair and no hope that meaningful employment will ever return:

“In the 1930s, unemployed working people could anticipate that their jobs would come back. If you’re a worker in manufacturing today — the current level of unemployment there is approximately like the Depression — and current tendencies persist, those jobs aren’t going to come back.

Between the Lines: Did You Lose Your Edge?

ColumnConscious life, hear me roar.

A friend commented on a recent column I wrote, saying, “The last time I went to hear a band in Boston, I realized I’d become the creepy older guy in the back of the room.”

“Creepy?” I asked him. “We’ve become creepy?”

From The Vault: Getting The The World To Change Gear

Two wheeled and ready for speed.

This week we celebrated both National Bike To Work Day, and the week before, National Bike Month (as we’ve done for years). We admit it – when it comes to the human-powered, pedal-driven single-track marvel known as the bicycle, we’re biased. But it’s not just about machine-worship. As these 6 stories from our archives demonstrate, bicycles can make our world a better place…

The goal for Asha 2012 is to provide bicycles to girls who have endured and transcended similar situations of slavery and abuse, in turn empowering them to take part in their communities, attend school and grow as strong women.

Police Chase Wild Moose On The Loose

LOGAN, Utah -- Utah wildlife officials say a moose went on a jaunt through neighborhoods north of Logan and triggered a police chase.

Division of Wildlife Resources officers tried to corner the wandering bull moose on Wednesday morning when the animal ran away. It was stopped when conservation officer Mark Burgess shot it with a tranquilizer dart.

Officers rolled the subdued moose in a large tarp and lifted him into a trailer.

Burgess says most of the moose calls that the department receives come in the winter, but a few come during the early spring.

Danish Study Links Co-Sleeping To Decreased Risk of Obesity

Co-sleeping, kids sleeping, inhabitots, green parenting, children

Co-sleeping — when babies and young children share a bed with one or both of their parents — has now been linked to reduced obesity. According to a new Danish study, children who regularly co-sleep with their parents are 70-percent less likely to be overweight when compared to kids who never sleep with their parents. So what’s behind the correlation? Although researchers aren’t clear on why the co-sleepers were slimmer, they have some theories, such as kids who co-sleep may have a greater sense of emotional support, whereas children who are not allowed to sleep with their parents may feel rejected, and in turn, negative feelings may increase the risk of obesity.
